    This is the biggest piece of misinformation I have ever seen to trash a program that has worked for millions and millions of people. These people haven't been to one AA meeting to identify with anything. You will always find what you're looking for. Always. That's why people don't stay sober. That's why people kill themselves. That's why people isolate. AA pulled me from all of that, not to it. Bunch of friggin quacks.....

    If you don't like it, don't go. If you resent AA, get some help with that, because, in a healthy way, they don't give a crap about your resentment. AA encourages members to seek professional help if one feels they need it. They are not professionals, don't claim to be professionals, and a lot of your views seem to be rooted in some strong personal feelings, not facts. For 36 years, I have yet to see a Rational Recovery group be anything but a rehashing of AA resentment, which is sad because so much more could be learned.

    This was another interesting conversation. When Mick mentions the semantic precision in REBT and not standing a situation I am reminded by the REBT phrases, USA: Unconditional Self Acceptance and Don't Let Frustrations Turn Into Disturbances. Yeah, we might get I Can't Stand It -itis but as long as we accept that in life there will be frustrating situations, events, people... It is OKay. Be aware not to fuel them into disturbances. Life is full of frustration. That is the Human condition. Manage frustration. Focus on the positives which there will be in life as well. 👍

    Thanks for this discussion. This was the interesting bit (5:30 to 6:10) Behaviour related to jealousy is toxic not the feeling. e.g. I noticed 2 electric toothbrushes, a pink shower cap and female razor whilst visiting new boyfriend's home. I could have created a disturbance as my feelings were jealous of this "invisible female" but I stored the feelings within and did not let them ruin that evening. I did not mention them at all. ⏩Fast forward to two weeks later, his sister visited him and in passing she mentioned that they (the bathroom items) belong to her and that she leaves them here as she often visits and stays overnight. This resolved my jealousy. Jealous feelings: accept you've got them, don't let them manifest outwardly. As your reaction/behaviour after becoming jealous can greatly foster or hinder the relationship.

    Stoics seek to eliminate negative emotions using practical techniques like reframing (thinking differently about a situation, etc) and viewing setbacks in life, not as negative things but as challenges and/or tests from which you grow/strengthen/develop as a better human being. Similar aims to REBT, but REBT seems to me to be more systematic.

    I never heard to stay away from normal people. Maybe in the first year when I was starting to apply the steps I stayed close to AA. But Ive had 5 home groups in 2 states and a symptom of recovery is having relationships and fitting in with non-alcoholics. It is often referred to as "fooling" normal people into believing you are not a narcissistic alcoholic....

    The first guy with glasses has no idea what the AA program is about and why it would or wouldn't work. Kind of sad he's painting it as a program that only certain people can get. I think the proof is in the number of 12 step programs and the success. Virtually no other program or system has anywhere near the success. These guys have a "job" to do and protect. No one in AA is paid.

    Lol!😂 I am the biggest non conformist on the planet, and I often don't tow the AA line, but the fine print says, " The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. " I hold them to that, and I have been sober for 2 years. The "conformity" is usually just common sense. Take it or leave it. You can't get kicked out. I'm 57, and I drank for 44 years.

    This is really cool to see and hear Dr. Debbie in such an intimate interview. I just finished a short RUclips biography doc. on Albert Ellis, and I recognize Dr. Debbie from a few of the pics and videos I found during my online research. Ellis is one of my psych heroes because of all the people he helped, and especially for his comedic approach to psychotherapy. I just hope that I did him justice in my fun little video, and provided accurate accounts from his life and work.

    Also I want to add that the weakness of therapy is in providing an ethical world view or principle (what should one do and not do in any moral situation, etc). A holistic approach should be both therapy and philosophical counseling. Philosophy is rigorous when it comes to arguing for or against your beliefs.

  • @maestro1168
    @maestro1168 3 месяца назад

    Why not invite a philosopher specialized in Stoicism? Stoicism doesn’t say that we cannot/shouldn’t have pleasure in buying a house, having sex, pursue fame and wealth; but rather it should be an indifference (preferred vs unpreferred indifference). Why is this the case? Because in any case that humans don’t achieve or loose these things (wealth, fame, house), their tranquality wouldn’t be disturbed. Stocism is big on maintaining tranquality.
